性格や態度を英語で表す
「性格・人格」と訳される personality とは何でしょうか？

ある人の性格を知りたいとき、どんな質問をしますか？

人の「外見」を聞くときはこうなります。注意してください。

性格表現の基本型
誰かの性格を説明するとき、どう言えばいいでしょう？
- 性格の特徴を表すキーワードを知っていれば、簡潔に表現できます。
- キーワードを知らなくても、既知の単語を使って表現します。
- 「誰々に似ている」とたとえてみます。
ここでは、性格の特徴を表す単語を使った表現を見ていきます。いくつかのパターンがあります。
基本パターン
He is honest.
訳 彼は正直です。
be動詞+形容詞で性格を表せます。
He is an idealist.
訳 彼は理想主義者です。
be動詞+名詞でも表せます。
He is always finding fault with others.
訳 彼はいつも他人のあらさがしをしています。
動詞で表せます。always を伴うことも多いです。
He is the kind of person who’ll do anything to help others.
訳 彼は人を助けるためには何でもするような人です。
the kind of person who で「～する人」。
She has a serene disposition and so do her friends.
訳 彼女は穏やかな性格で、彼女の友人たちもそうだ。
have a ～ disposition で「～な性格です」。disposition は「気質・性質」。
He is reliable. He is very straightforward and always keeps his promise.
訳 彼は頼りがいがある。非常に正直だし、いつも約束を守る。
性格を一言で言ってから、後に具体例や補足説明を続けるとわかりやすいです。
程度の表し方
He was kind enough to give me a massage.
訳 彼は親切にもマッサージをしてくれました。
この enough to は「～するのに足りるほど～だ」の意味。
She is really/so/quite sociable.
訳 彼女はとても社交的です。
性格の特徴を強調するときの言い方。
He is a bit/a little selfish.
訳 彼はちょっと利己的です。
性格の特徴を弱めるときの言い方。
She can be a little mean sometimes.
訳 彼女は時々、少し意地悪になることがある。
ネガティブな性格を表現するとき、通常は相手を傷つけないソフトな言い方をします。
性格7タイプを英語で表す

素直で優しい性格
正直で素直、あるいは親切で優しい性質を表現します。

基礎編
James is always considered warm.
訳 ジェームズはいつも温かいと思われている。
What a relief! You look honest and gentle.
訳 安心した。あなたは素直で優しく見えます。
I really like her because she is kind and considerate to everyone.
訳 彼女はみんなに親切で思いやりがあるので、私は本当に彼女が好きです。
She is loyal to her teacher and likes to organize her notebook.
訳 彼女は先生に忠実で、ノートを整理するのが好きだ。

They felt compassion for the people suffering from the flood.

compassion は「救いたいと願う思いやり、慈悲心」。
She is naturally good at empathetic listening.

empathy は「共感」、 sympathy「同情」と訳されることがあります。
前者は感情移入的で、後者は他人の不幸を認識したときに生じるあわれみの気持ちといわれます。
楽しく明るい性格
陽気で楽しく、明朗な性格を表現します。

真面目で勤勉な性格
真面目で礼儀正しく、責任感のある性格を表します。

心配性で怖がり、慎重で用心深い性格を表現します。

Someone has to explain his selling point, for he is too modest.

セールスポイントは和製英語です。英語では selling point。
She is so timid, but it is also advantageous for her.

男らしさ・女らしさ
男っぽさや女性らしさ、あるいは両性具有的な性質を表現します。

Most people tell me I’m androgynous.

ネガティブな特徴
人を不快な気持ちにさせる性質を表す方法です。
誹謗中傷にならないように気をつけて使いましょう。
また、良くないとされる性格特徴も、裏を返せば何かの良い性質を表していることもあります。

self-
self は「自分、自己」ですね。self- がついた単語は英語にたくさんあります。
He was self-assured and immediately trusted by newcomers.
訳 彼は自信に満ちていて、新参者からもすぐに信頼された。
I hope every employee is both self-confident and humble.
訳 すべての従業員が自信と謙虚さを兼ね備えていることを願っている。
She shows off her talent because she has a need for self-esteem.

The self-conscious young tends to check the social media response.

-hearted
heart は「気持ち、心臓、胸」を表します。

mind は「心、精神、意識」を表します。

temper は「気質、気性」を表します。
I happened to talk to a bad-tempered policeman, so I was not allowed.

訳 彼女は短気そうに見えましたが、実際は気配り上手でした。

細かいことを言う。

意味 つまらないことにこだわる、あら探しをする、重箱の隅をようじでほじくる

cross を使って表される態度。
cross
意味 十字架、横切る、逆らう
Don’t cross me again. は「二度と逆らわないで」。
「邪魔をする」の意味にもなります。
