今回のテーマ：部屋の表現
- 同じ四角い空間でも、人間が使う部屋は用途により呼び方が変わります。
- この記事では、家屋・会社・ホテル・乗物などの部屋の名前を例文で学びます。
- 会話に広く応用できます。場所の指定や、宿泊の予約にも役に立ちます。
生活・活動・憩いの場としての空間
人間や物が置かれる「場所」を、英文のなかで示すことは多いです。
人間の生活空間や作業空間として、部屋は重要なものです。
部屋は用途に応じて名前が変わり、使い分けられています。
いくつかの例を挙げると…
- 「台所・調理室」は kitchen
- 「事務所・研究室」は office
- 「展示室・陳列室」は showroom
ホテルを予約する時は、single, double, twin, suite などの区別をします
今回は、部屋の種類の表し方を見ていきます。

家屋の部屋
dining room, kitchen
Sweet rolls are on the table in the dining room.
訳 食堂のテーブルの上には、菓子パンが置かれています。
Call him because my kitchen fan got broken.
訳 換気扇が壊れたので、彼に電話してください。
living room, private room
My father is lying down in the living room.
訳 父は居間で横になっています。
I’ll give my son a private room sooner or later.
訳 そのうち息子に個室を与えよう。
bedroom, restroom
I’ve never seen such a spacious bedroom before.
訳 こんなに広々とした寝室は前に見たことがありません。
広い部屋を表すときに wide は使いません。
I have to replace an air fresher in the restroom.
訳 トイレの芳香剤を交換しないといけない。
toilet は「便器」そのものを指します。
「便所」は restroom と言ったほうがいいです。
spare room
This spare room is for the unexpected guest.
訳 この予備室は、突然の来客のためにある。
spare room は普段使わないが、何かのために用意しておく部屋。
Japanese-style room
He converted an room into a Japanese-style one.
訳 彼は部屋を和室に改装した。
「和室」は Japanese-style room です。
家屋の特殊な部屋
storage room, garage
The abandoned storage room is covered with dust.
訳 放置された貯蔵室は、ほこりだらけだ。
storage room は「貯蔵・保管する場所」。
Many sacks of grain are stacked in the outer barn.
訳 穀物の袋はたくさん外の納屋に積み上げられている。
ちなみに、outbuilding は「付属建築物」で、母屋から離れた納屋や物置きなど。
He permitted me to watch his luxury car in his garage.
訳 彼は自分のガレージにある高級車を見せてくれた。
Please place this ancient bottle in the locked room.
訳 この古い瓶を、鍵のかかった部屋に置いてください。
attic, basement
The burglar decided to hide in the attic for a moment.
訳 空き巣は屋根裏にしばらく隠れることにした。
He remembers putting his travel items in his loft.
訳 彼は自分の旅行グッズを屋根裏に置いたことを覚えている。
loft は「屋根裏・二階」の意味ですね。lofty は「高い」。
Could you put away the used books in the basement?
訳 地下室にある古本を片付けてくれませんか？
safe room
On that day, they hid themselves away in the safe room.
訳 その日、彼らは避難室に身を隠した。
safe room は不法侵入者などが入ってきたときなどに身を隠す部屋。
作業・活動用の部屋
study, workroom
The writer has been shut up in his study since yesterday.
訳 作家は昨日から書斎に閉じこもっている。
We can observe the craftsman whittling in his workroom.
訳 職人さんが作業部屋で削っている様子を、観察できる。
laboratory
This clean room is an ideal biochemistry laboratory.
訳 この清潔な部屋は理想的な生化学実験室である。
Please confirm that the computer lab is firmly locked.
訳 コンピュータ室がしっかり施錠されていることを確認してください。
chamber
They had a heated argument in the chamber.
訳 彼らは議場で激しい口論をした。
interrogation room
Katsudon is on the desk in the interrogation room.
訳 カツ丼は取調室の机の上に置いてある。
linen room
The overnight guest saw the staff exit the linen room.
訳 宿泊客はスタッフがリネン室から出てくるのを見た。
リネン室とは、ホテルや病院などにあります。
シーツ・枕カバー・タオルなどを置いておく部屋。
studio, martial arts gym
I’ll give you a lesson at my dance studio.
訳 私のダンス教室でレッスンしますよ。
studio は芸術家・写真家の「アトリエ」、「録音室・放送室」「ダンス教室」。
There are tatami mats in the martial arts gym.
訳 道場には畳があります。
martial arts gym は「道場」。
We decided who would clean the clubroom next.
訳 次に誰が部室を掃除するかを決めた。
A soundproof room is required if you are a piano player.
訳 ピアノを弾く場合は防音室が必要です。
soundproof room は「防音室」です。

office, meeting room など

訳 この複写室は3人で入るには狭すぎる。
copy room は複写機などが置いてある部屋。
Some people are having a chat in the meeting room.
訳 会議室では何人かの人がおしゃべりをしています。
大きな会議場は conference room 。
300 people can be seated in the main auditorium.
訳 大講堂には300人が着席できる。
auditorium は「講堂」。
That toy has already shipped from the warehouse.
訳 そのおもちゃはすでに倉庫から出荷されています。
warehouse は企業などが使う「大きな倉庫」。
kitchenette, break room など
They were too chatty in the staff room at all times.
訳 彼らはいつも、従業員室でおしゃべりをしすぎだった。
Tom and I were probably talking around the kitchenette.
訳 トムと私はおそらく、給湯室のあたりで話していたでしょう。
kitchenette はホテルなどの宿泊施設の「簡易キッチン」、会社の「給湯室」。
There is an LCD TV in the company’s break room.
訳 会社の休憩室には液晶テレビがあります。
I have dropped my cards in the dressing room.
訳 カードを更衣室に落としました。
security office
The guard is looking at a monitor in the security office.
訳 守衛は警備室のモニターを見ている。
建物内の利用者用の部屋
hotel の部屋
I wonder that a beachfront suite is suitable for the couple.
訳 二人には浜辺沿いのスイートルームがお似合いなのでは？
- シングルベッドが1台の部屋が single 。
- ダブルベッドが1台の部屋が double 。
- ベッドが2台だと twin 。
suite は1部屋にベッドルームが1つあります。
それに加え、ダイニング・キッチン・リビングなどが続いています。
ハイクラスな客室です。
Does that hotel have any vacancies for such a large family?
訳 そのホテルは、そんな大家族が入れる空室があるのだろうか。
vacancy は「空室」。
We enjoyed a beautiful aquarium in the guest room.
訳 私たちは客室の美しい水槽を楽しみました。
We offer a comfortable balconied lounge and cold drinks.
訳 私たちは、快適なバルコニー付きのラウンジと冷たい飲み物を提供します。
lounge は空港・ホテルなどの「休憩室」、「家の居間や玄関」。
bay, ward
He can be found in the second bay of the twelfth ward.
訳 彼は第12病棟の第2病室にいる。
ちなみに、operating room（OR）は「手術室」のことです。
changing room
The tailor’s changing rooms were two next to each other.
訳 仕立屋の試着室は隣り合わせに2つあった。
showroom, waiting room
Our boss ordered us to make the auto showroom clean.
訳 自動車展示場を清潔にするように、上司は私たちに指示しました。
The express platform has a waiting room for passengers.
訳 特急のホームには乗客用の待合室が設けられていた。
乗物内の空間
bridge
They reported the deputy captain was also on the bridge.
訳 副船長もブリッジにいるとの報告です。
操船の指揮を出す場所をブリッジといいます。
compartment, cabin, cab
One compartment has several seats facing each other.
訳 1つのコンパートメントはいくつか座席が向かい合わせになっている。
compartment は「列車内の個室」で、ドアと向かい合わせの座席があります。
He was reading a journal in a cabin of a sleeping car.
訳 彼は寝台車の客室で雑誌を読んでいた。
「寝台車の小室」などは cabin です。
The boy is watching the driver’s cab of the local train.
訳 少年は普通列車の運転室を見ている。
cargo area
The sightseeing bus has a cargo area at the bottom of the body.
訳 観光バスは車体下部に荷室がある。
豆知識
部屋と部屋をつなぐ通路。
「廊下」を表す英語は、
イギリス英語→ corridor
アメリカ英語→ hall か hallway
