複合不定代名詞とは何か
複合不定代名詞の定義
不定代名詞とは、不特定の人・もの・数量などを表す代名詞のことです。
たとえば、one, another, some, any, both, each などがあります。
不定代名詞の一部に thing がついた単語があります。複合不定代名詞といいます。

会話でも活躍する単語ばかりです。使い分けられますか？
どれも単数扱いになるので、注意しましょう。
something の意味
英語では複合不定代名詞をどう定義しているでしょうか？

つまり、「正確に知られたり述べられたりしていないもの」を指しています。

thing の意味と使い方

訳 この重い物を動かせますか？
この thing は物体。
Pack your things before leaving.
訳 出発前に荷物をまとめてください。
things で「持ち物」。
The only thing I can do is（to）give you this handbook.
訳 私にできることはこの手引きをあなたにあげることだけです。
The only thing I can do is（to）は「私にできる唯一のことは」。to は省略可。
I was hungry but I couldn’t find a thing to eat.
訳 お腹がすいていたのに、食べるものが何も見つからなかった。
not ～ a thing で「ひとつもない」。
The thing is, I don’t have enough money.
訳 問題はお金が足りないことです。
The thing is, ～ で「大事なことは、問題なのは」。
How are things going?
訳 調子はどうですか？
この things は「全般の状況」を指しています。
something の意味と使い方
something new
There is something new about him.
訳 彼には何か新しいものがある。
There is something about ～ は「～には何かがある」。
something に形容詞がつく場合は、後ろに配置します。
something else
This restaurant is something else.
訳 このレストランは別格です。
something else は「何か別のもの」。文脈によっては「別格」「変わっている」の意味に。
良い意味でも悪い意味でも使えます。
数字 ＋ something
The board members are all sixty-something.
訳 理事は全員、60何歳です。
数字がはっきりしない場合に、something を使えます。
or something
She is an accountant or something.
訳 彼女は会計士か何かです。
～ or something で「～か何か」。
something of
My boyfriend is something of a reggae singer.
訳 私のボーイフレンドはちょっとしたレゲエ歌手です。
something of ～ で「ちょっとした～」。
something went wrong
We are very sorry but something went wrong.
訳 大変申し訳ありませんが、何か問題が発生したようです。
something go wrong で「何か問題が発生する」。
something tells me
Something tells me she will be famous in the future.
訳 なんとなく彼女は将来有名になる感じがする。
直訳すると「何かが私に伝える」。そこから「なんとなく～な気がする」の意味に。
something が表す不確定
以上の例からわかるように、something は「よくわからない何か」を指します。
何かを指しているものの、不明確な感じです。

anything の意味と使い方
I’d give you anything you need.
訳 必要なものは何でも差し上げます。
anything は「どんなものでも」。
anythig will do
What do you want to drink? Anything will do.
訳 何が飲みたいですか？ 何でもいいです。
anything will do. で「何でもかまわない」。
anything but
He cannot speak anything but Thai.
訳 彼はタイ語しか話せません。
anything but で「～以外の何も」。
for anything
I wouldn’t do such a thing for anything.
訳 私なら何をもらっても、そんなことはしない。
for anything で「何をもらっても」。
as ～ as anything
He can eat soba as fast as anything.
訳 彼はものすごく早く、そばを食べることができる。
as ～ as anything で「どんなものとも同じぐらい～」の意味です。
そこから「ものすごく～」を表します。
anything is possible
Anything is possible.
訳 すべてのことは可能です。
同じ内容を Nothing is impossible. と表せます。
something と anything の違い
something は否定文や疑問文でも使われます。anything は肯定文でも使われます。
まず、something から。
Would you like something to eat?
訳 何かお食べになりますか？
something は「何かがそこにあり、ある程度特定できるもの」を指します。
この例の場合、相手が「はい」と言うことを期待している感じです。
フレンドリーな言い方になります。
次に、anything です。
Would you like anything to eat?
訳 何かお食べになりますか？
anything は「特定はできないけれど、どれでも」という意味合いがあります。
この例の場合、相手が「はい」と言うか確信がない感じです。
礼儀正しく、押しつけない言い方になります。
nothing の意味と使い方
基本的な例
The baby does nothing but cry.
訳 赤ちゃんは泣くだけです。
直訳すれば「泣く以外の何もしない」。
There is nothing like classical music.
訳 クラシックに限るね。
There is nothing like は「～のようなものは何もない」「他に類がない」。
比較級とともに
Nothing smells better than the soap I bought yesterday.
訳 昨日買った石鹸の香りは最高です。
「～よりいい匂いのするものは何もない」の意味から、「～の匂いは最高だ」を表します。
Nothing goes better than the steak and red wine.
訳 ステーキと赤ワインは最高の取り合わせです。
Nothing makes me happier than sleeping in a fluffy futon.
訳 ふわふわの布団で寝るのは、何よりの幸せです。
There is nothing more pleasant than walking at the seashore.
訳 海岸を歩くより心地良いことはない。

everything の意味と使い方
「すべて」
I owe everything to your efforts.
訳 すべてはあなたがたの努力のおかげです。
owe everything to で「全部は～のおかげ」。
Everything on the checklist has been finished.
訳 チェックリストのすべてが終了しています。
この everything は「リストのすべての項目」。
We are going to talk about everything in the production process.
訳 生産工程のすべてについて私たちは話す予定です。
この everything は「工程のすべての段階」。
I read pretty much（just about）everything to master French.
訳 私はフランス語を習得するために、ほぼすべてを読みました。
「ほぼすべて」と言うときは、pretty much か just about をつけます。
almost everything という言い方もあります。
応用的な使い方

訳 調子はどうですか？
この everything は「漠然とした状況」を表しています。
Good teamwork is everything.
訳 良いチームワークがすべてです。
この everything は「最も大事なこと」。

意味 ちょっと、多少、ある程度
know a thing or two で「ある程度知識がある」の意味です。
かなりの知識がある場合でも、謙虚にこう言うことがあります。
no one はくっつけません。

なぜか、 no one だけは1語にしません。
each と every はどう違うのか。

「ちょっとした」という日本語は、「たいしたことのない」にもなり、「なかなかの」にもなる。
例文は後者の意味。
