天気を表す英語
自然現象の中で、天気はとても身近なものですね。
晴れ・曇り・雨・風・さわやか・おだやか…など、英語でどう表すのでしょう？
まずは、weather の定義を見てみましょう。

it の表現
時間、天候、距離、明暗を表すとき、意味のない it を主語にできます。
It‘s windy.
訳 風が強い。
It is + 形容詞 のパターン。
It‘s a cloudy day.
訳 曇りの日です。
It is a 形容詞 + day のパターン。
It‘s raining lightly.
訳 雨が軽く降っています。
It is 現在分詞 のパターン。
It was a brisk fall day.
訳 冷たくてさわやかな秋の日だった。
風や空気の爽快感は crisp や brisk で表します。brisk のほうが、ひんやりした語感です。
it 以外の表現
it を使わなくても天気を表現できます。
There’s a gentle breeze.
訳 穏やかなそよ風が吹いている。
There is（are）+ 名詞 のパターン。
We’re having mild weather today.
訳 今日は穏やかな天気です。
We are having 形容詞 + weather のパターン。
天気の聞き方
What’s the weather like in Tokyo?
訳 東京はどんな天気ですか？
How is the weather this weekend?
訳 週末はどんな天気ですか？
天気予報の表現
I’ve checked the weather forecasts.
訳 天気予報を調べました。
The weather forecast predicted heavy rain for most of the day.
訳 天気予報は、一日の大半は大雨だと予想した。
There’s a 70 percent chance of rain today.
訳 今日は70％の確率で雨が降ります。
chance は「確率」の意味。
気温・湿度の表現
夏の暑さや冬の寒さをどう言いますか？
湿度の表現も覚えましょう。
What’s the temperature?
訳 気温は何度ですか？
気温を尋ねる基本的な言い方です。
The temperature will rise to about 33 degrees today.
訳 今日、気温は33度ぐらいまで上がるだろう。
Is the number of record high temperatures increasing?
訳 最高気温の新記録の数は増えていますか？
record high で「過去最高の」。反対は record low です。
There’s a heatwave.
訳 酷暑だ。
Japan is hot and sticky/muggy/humid in summer.
訳 日本の夏は蒸し暑い。
sticky, muggy, humid は「蒸し蒸しする」の意味。
The temperature dropped suddenly last night.
訳 昨夜は突然、気温が下がった。
It’s chilly and foggy.
訳 肌寒く霧が多い。
The icy roads are slippery.
訳 凍結した道路は滑りやすい。
The village is cold and frosty in winter.
訳 その村は冬は凍る寒さです。
天気の種類を表す英語
「晴れ」
It’s sunny.
訳 晴れている。
The sun is out.
訳 太陽が出た。
It looks like the weather is going to clear up tomorrow.
訳 明日は晴れそうだ。
There’s not a cloud.
訳 雲一つない。
「曇り」
There’s a lot of clouds.
訳 雲が多い。
It’s overcast.
訳 どんよりとしている。
Do you think England is grey and gloomy?
訳 イギリスはどんよりとして暗いと思いますか？
「雨」
I felt a raindrop.
訳 ポツンと来た。
There will be scattered showers in the morning.
訳 午前中は所により、にわか雨でしょう。
scattered は「所によって」の意味。
It drizzled on and off at night.
訳 夜に小雨が降ったり止んだりした。
on and off は「断続的に」「時々」。
You may get caught in a downpour.
訳 あなたは土砂降りに会うかも。
There’s a rainstorm with thunder and lightning
訳 雷と稲妻を伴った暴風雨だ。
「雹・雪」
雹や雪はどんな言い方があるでしょう？
The hailstone was as big as a volleyball.
訳 その雹はバレーボールと同じ大きさでした。
It’s snowing heavily.
訳 大雪が降っている。
He got lost in the blizzard.
訳 彼は猛吹雪の中で迷子になった。
災害を表す英語表現
「豪雨」
The dark clouds are moving faster.
訳 暗い雲の動きが速くなっている。
The road was under water from a heavy rain shower.
訳 道路はゲリラ豪雨で冠水していた。
There was an abandoned lorry around the flooded underpass.
訳 冠水した地下道周辺には、放置された大型トラックがあった。
The torrential river had washed away the old wooden bridge.
訳 激流で古い木造の橋が流された。
Be aware of landslides where the ground is unstable.
訳 地盤が不安定な場所では、土砂崩れに注意すること。
「台風」
There’s a typhoon approaching.
訳 台風が接近中です。
熱帯低気圧は、 typhoon, hurricane, cyclone と地域によって呼び名が変わります。
The wind is picking up.
訳 風が強くなってきました。
Which way is the wind blowing?
訳 どっちに風が吹いていますか？
Meteorologists predict the hurricane will make landfall on Thursday.
訳 気象学者は、ハリケーンが木曜日に上陸すると予測する。
meteorologist はちょっと難しい単語ですね。
「地震・噴火」
Two earthquakes hit the continent nearly simultaneously.
訳 ふたつの地震がほぼ同時に大陸を襲った。
The tsunami alert was canceled.
訳 津波警報はキャンセルされました。
How did she evacuate in an earthquake?
訳 彼女は地震でどのように避難したんですか？
The volcano will probably erupt within a few days.
訳 火山はおそらく数日以内に噴火するでしょう。
