自動詞・他動詞の区別
自動詞・他動詞とは何でしょう？
簡潔に言うと、目的語を従えないのが自動詞です。目的語を従えるのが他動詞です。
- 自動詞のすぐあとには名詞が来ません。名詞を続けるなら、後に「前置詞＋名詞」。
- 他動詞は目的語をとれるため、目的語の前に前置詞はいりません。
自動詞と他動詞で文型が変わります。
動詞のなかには、自動詞・他動詞を勘違いしやすいものがあります。

All the insects are waiting for spring.
訳 虫たちはみんな春を待っている。
I also agree with them on that point.
訳 その点では、私も彼らの意見に賛成です。
I have to reply to his letter by tomorrow.
訳 明日までに、彼の手紙に返事をしなければならない。
When will he arrive at Ueno station?
訳 いつ彼は上野駅に到着するのだろうか。
ちなみに、固有名詞には the がつくものとつかないものがあります。
駅の固有名詞は the をつけません。
初級編
He strongly insisted on doing that.
訳 彼はそうすることを強く主張した。

他動詞
自動詞と勘違いしやすい、紛らわしい他動詞を述べます。

訳 結婚して下さい。
He is leaving Osaka for Tokyo tomorrow.
訳 彼は明日東京に向けて大阪を出発します。
Were they able to reach a consensus?
訳 彼らは意見の一致に到ることができましたか？
It took three hours to answer the difficult question.
訳 難しい質問に答えるのに、3時間かかりました。
Someone seemed to enter my house through a window.
訳 誰かが窓から私の家に入ったようだった。
初級編
We are going to attend a funeral this morning.
訳 今朝は葬式に出席します。
We have deeply considered the proposal for a long time.
訳 私たちは長い間、その提案を深く考えました。
I’d like to discuss some topics with you.
訳 いくつかの話題を、あなたと話し合いたいと思います。
I completely oppose your suggestion.
訳 私はあなたの提案に完全に反対します。
You should obey the doctor’s order to get well soon.
訳 あなたはすぐに元気になるために、医者の命令に従うべきです。
中級編
Don’t mention it to them because it’s a secret.

覚え方
自動詞と間違えやすい他動詞の覚え方があります。
頭文字 MEDAMARR を取って、「メダマアルアル（目玉あるある）」です。

自動詞と他動詞で単語が異なる例
自動詞と他動詞で綴りが変わる単語があります。
「横たわる」「横たえる」
He lay down on the sofa.
訳 彼はソファに横になった。
「横たわる」は lie 。lie – lay – lain / lying と変化。
The company lays railroad tracks.
訳 会社は線路を敷いている。
「横たえる」は lay 。lay – laid – laid / laying と変化。
「上がる」「上げる」
The temperature will rise today.
訳 今日は気温が上がる。
They say that she’ll be raised to manager.
訳 彼女は店長に昇格するらしい。
「座る」「座らせる」
The woman sitting next to him is my sister.
訳 彼の隣に座っているのは妹だ。
He seated himself and read a newspaper.
訳 彼は座って新聞を読んだ。
