another, the other, others, the others の違い
不定代名詞の other と another の違いは何でしょう？ 基本を整理します。
単数と複数、不特定と特定で掛け合わせた表です。

例文で、実際の使われ方を見ましょう。
the other
other は「他のもの・ひと」の意味です。
- 「特定の他のもの・ひと」には the がつきます。
- 「不特定の他のもの・ひと」には無冠詞になります。
代名詞、形容詞としても使えます。
One of his socks is in the drawer, and the other is missing.
訳 彼の靴下の1つは引き出しの中にあり、もう1つはありません。
2つのもののうち、もう片方を表す時は the other です。3つ以上のもののうち、残った最後の1個を表すときも the other です。なぜ the かというと、一つに決まるからです。

others
I don’t trust him because he is always rude to others.
訳 彼はいつも他人に失礼なので、私は彼を信用していません。
「（自分以外の）他人」を表すときは、無冠詞の others 。
the others
He and I have finished homework, but the others have not.
訳 彼と私は宿題を終えましたが、他の人はまだ宿題をしていません。
「残りの人全員」を表すときは、the others 。残りの人の数は、一つに決まるので the です。
other のイディオム
other day
I’ll visit that temple some other day.
訳 そのお寺には、またいつか行ってみようと思います。
some other day は「未来のいつか別の日」。
I water the pot plants every other day.
訳 鉢植えの水やりは1日おきにしています。
every other day は「1日おき」。
The pen that you gave me the other day is really easy to write with.
訳 先日いただいたペンは、本当に書きやすいです。
the other night, the other evening, the other afternoon などの言い方もあります。
other than
Yesterday, I bought something other than this.
訳 昨日、これとは別のものを買いました。
other than ～ で、「～以外のもの」。
each other
They have mutual respect for each other.
訳 彼らはお互いを尊重しています。
each other は「お互い」。
any other
Are there any other questions?
訳 他に質問はありますか？
He is smarter than any other student in this class.
訳 彼はこのクラスのどの生徒よりも頭がいい。
比較級とともに any other が用いられると「他のどんな～より」。
another の使い方
another の成り立ち
another は an other からできた言葉です。不特定の「もうひとつのもの・ひと」を指します。
This bag is too expensive. Can you show me another?
訳 このバッグは高すぎる。 別のものを見せてもらえますか？
形容詞的に使う
Let’s go to another shop.
訳 別のお店に行きましょう。
other と同じく名詞の前につけて、形容詞的に使えます。
数字の前につける
I ate two hamburgers, but I want another two.
訳 ハンバーガーを2個食べたけど、もう2個ほしい。
数字の前につけて「さらに加えて」の意味。
one, some, other, another の表現
on the one hand, on the other hand
On the one hand, it was a great loss to our company, but on the other hand, it improved the unity of our employees.
訳 それは当社にとって大きな損失でしたが、一方では従業員の結束を改善しました。
「一方は」「もう一方は」は on the one hand と on the other hand を使います。
逆接の意味になります。
some, the others
Some of the ingredients are easy to get, but the others are not.
訳 材料のいくつかは簡単に手に入りますが、他の材料はそうではありません。
「いくつか」と「それ以外の全部」の意味です。
some, others
Some people are sitting down and others are walking around.
訳 座っている人もいれば、歩き回っている人もいます。
「～する人もいれば、～する人もいる」は some と 無冠詞の others を使います。この文は「座っている人もいれば、歩き回っている人もいて、それ以外のことをしている人もいる」。
one thing, another
Saying is one thing and doing（is）another.
訳 言うことと行うことは別です。
「AとBは別のもの」と言うときに one thing と another が使えます。
one, another
I saw lots of fish in the container: for example, one was a goldfish and another was a guppy.
訳 容器の中にはたくさんの魚が入っていました。たとえば、1つは金魚、もう1つはグッピーでした。
3つ以上のもののうち、「ある一つ」「もう一つ」を示すときは、one と another 。
one, another, the other
I have three small bottles: one is red, another is green, and the other is blue.
訳 私は3つの小さいボトルを持っています。1つは赤、もう1つは緑、そしてもう1つは青です。
3つのものを示すとき、one, another, the other 。
one after the other
Good things and bad things in life come one after the other.
訳 人生には良いことも悪いことも、次々とやってくる。
「2つのものが交互に」は、one after the other 。
one after another
The leaves of the tree were falling one after another.
訳 木の葉が次々と落ちていた。
「3つ以上のものが次々に」は、one after another 。
【補足】otherwise の使い方
otherwise は副詞、形容詞として使えます。ここでは、副詞の otherwise を整理します。
仮定法とともに使う
He was not involved in that matter; otherwise, I would have arrested him.
訳 彼はその問題に関与していませんでした。そうでなければ、私が彼を逮捕していたでしょう。
一語で if 節と同じ働きをして、直前に述べたことの反対の仮定を表します。
命令文の後に使う
Stay here; otherwise, the bear will attack you.
訳 ここにいろ。そうしないと熊に襲われる。
命令文の後に使うと、「さもないと」の意味。
