Defenseless Pigeons Around the Station

I passed by the square in front of the station today.
It was covered with concrete and there were a few people sitting on benches.
I found several pigeons here and there. Most of them were sitting still on the ground.
Today is an autumn sunny day, so I thought that they were doing sunbathing.
They noticed me approaching but they didn’t stand up except for one pigeon.
I felt that they were so defenseless. Pigeons which settle down around the place where many people come and go are used to human beings.
They can occasionally ask us for food. Living with humans is their strategy to survive, I think.  
If they were wild sensitive birds which lived deep in the mountains, they would be cautious about a human’s every action.
We can’t see some kinds of birds in the mountain even if we can hear their songs.
Many years ago, I used to keep a dog. He sometimes showed his stomach to me.
If an animal shows its stomach to us, it surely trusts us very much.
The dog must have felt relaxed. It also indicated its submissive feeling to us.

今日は駅前の広場を通りました。
そこはコンクリートで覆われていて、ベンチに座っている人が数人いました。
あちこちに鳩が数羽いました。ほとんどが地面にじっと座っていました。
今日は秋晴れの日なので、日光浴をしているんだなと思いました。
鳩は私が近づいてくるのに気づいたものの、一羽を除いて立ち上がりませんでした。
とても無防備だと感じました。人々が多く行き交う場所に住み着く鳩は、人に慣れています。
ときには餌を求めてきます。人間と一緒に暮らすことが、彼らの生き残り戦略だと思います。
山奥に住む野生の敏感な鳥なら、人間の一挙手一投足を警戒するはずです。
山の中では、鳴き声は聞こえても姿は見えない鳥もいます。
何年も前、私は犬を飼っていました。犬はときどき、お腹を見せてくれました。
動物がお腹を見せてくれるなら、私たちをとても信頼しているのです。
その犬はきっとリラックスしていたのです。さらには、私たちへの忠誠心の表れでした。
