動き方を英語で表す
動きの詳しい描写とは
たとえば、トラックについて説明するとします。
- 「青い」「大きい」など、おもに形容詞で色形・雰囲気を表せます。
- 「走っている」「停止する」など、おもに動詞で動きを描写できます。
Two trucks are hurrying side-by-side.
They are heading for the market.
訳 2台のトラックが並走して急いでいる。市場へ向かっている。
この例文はトラックの動きを表しています。
hurrying で速さを、side-by-side で位置関係を、heading for で方向を示します。
このように、詳しい描写では情報が加えられます。
スピード・軌跡・方向・出発地や目的地などです。
英語の「動詞」は多い
それらの付加的な情報の言い表し方は、多いのでしょうか？
じつは、英語には「運動」「動作」を表す無数の動詞があります。
それらの表現をここで網羅することはできません。
しかし、よく使われるものを例文で見ていきましょう。

動きの種類と例文
静かな動き
Three air balloons are moving horizontally from west to east.
訳 3機の気球が西から東へ水平に動いている。
move horizontally で、「水平移動」を表せます。
The queue to the theater continues to move at low speed.
訳 劇場への列はゆっくり進み続けます。
low の位置の形容詞を変えることで、多様な速度を表せます。
There is no sound except for the dripping from the faucet.
訳 蛇口からポタポタと水が落ちる音以外、何の音もしない。
The leaves of the garden trees swayed in the gentle breeze.
訳 庭の木々の葉がそよ風に揺れた。
sway は「ゆっくり揺れる」感じです。
Will he come from the front or creep up from behind?
訳 彼は正面から来るのか、背後から忍び寄るのか?
It’s like crawling by inches on your belly in a deep cave.
訳 深い洞窟のなかで腹這いで数センチずつ這っていくようなものだ。
on なので「お腹をくっつけて」のイメージ。
The stalactites in this have grown over a long period of time.
訳 このなかの鍾乳石は長い年月をかけて成長したものだ。
He tilted his seat back slightly and backed his car up slowly.
訳 彼はシートを少し後ろに傾け、ゆっくりと車をバックさせた。
流れる動き
This ballpoint pen writes smoothly. Where did you buy it?
訳 このボールペンは滑らかに書ける。どこで買ったの？
write は筆記具を主語にできます。
The meteorite was seen passing in the south of Ulaanbaatar.
訳 隕石がウランバートルの南を通過しているのが見られた。
The books arranged at equal intervals fell one after another.
訳 等間隔に並べられた本が次から次へと倒れた。
将棋倒しは fall one after another で表せます。
The cherry blossom storm seems to be out of this world.
訳 桜吹雪はこの世のものとは思えない。
これは、storm を使った名詞的表現ですね。
The skaters glided on the rink gracefully. I admired them.
訳 スケーターたちはリンク上を優雅に滑った。私は彼らを賞賛した。
His private plane is gaining altitude 50 minutes after takeoff.
訳 彼の自家用機は離陸から50分後に高度を上げている。
The coach says a triple double is a triple twisting double backflip.
訳 トリプルダブルは、2回宙返り3回ひねりのことだとコーチは言う。
twist は「よる、ねじる、ゆがめる」、backflip は「後方宙返り、バク転」です。
喜びと動き
The cute rabbits hopped around the schoolyard during break.
訳 かわいいウサギが、休み時間に校庭を飛び回った。
Her acrobatic dance style captured the hearts of the audience.
訳 彼女の軽業的なダンスのスタイルは、観客の心をとらえた。
これもダンスの様子を名詞的にまとめています。
They were going crazy in the snowball fight, screaming with joy.
訳 彼らは雪合戦にはしゃぎまくり、喜びの声を上げていた。
「夢中であばれる」感じは、go crazy です。
When he heard his son’s birth, he sprang vigorously from his seat.
訳 息子の誕生を聞いたとき、彼は勢いよく席から飛び上がった。
I brought food. My doggo wiggled his hips and wagged his tail.
訳 私は食べ物を持ってきた。ワンコは腰をくねらせ、尻尾を振った。
激しい動き
A car tailgating me overtook my car and accelerated at 100 km/h.
訳 後ろに貼り付いていた車が私の車を追い越し、時速100kmに加速した。
tailgate は「ぴったり後ろにくっついて走る」。overtake は「追い越す」。
When trains stopped, a lot of people were rushing to the bus stop.
訳 電車が止まったとき、バス停は人でごった返していた。
The boxer with swollen eyes dodged punches quickly. It’s amazing!
訳 目を腫らしたボクサーは素早くパンチをかわしました。すごいです。
The beetle crashed into the shutters and then flew off somewhere.
訳 カブトムシはシャッターに激突し、それからどこかに飛んでいった。
A traffic jam occurred. The bridge collapsed due to overloading.
訳 渋滞が起きた。橋は過負荷によって崩壊した。
The wild boars pushed forward into the sweet potato field.
訳 柵を突破したイノシシたちは、サツマイモ畑へと突き進んでいった。
Smoke rose high and rocks were scattered in all directions.
訳 噴煙が高く舞い上がり、岩が四方八方に散らばっていた。
in all directions で、向かう方向を表現しています。
回転する動き
Someone kindly picked up a rolling can on the train.
訳 電車の中で転がる缶を拾ってくれた人がいた。
Turn the knob counterclockwise and press the button.
訳 つまみを反時計回りに回してボタンを押してください。
clockwise だと「時計回りに」です。
Do you think this fan is spinning slower than before?
訳 この扇風機、前より回転が遅くなったと思う？
扇風機などの通常速い回転には、spin を使います。
The planet, as you know, revolves around the sun.
訳 ご存知のように、その惑星は太陽の周りを回っている。
In the desert they felt like turning back to the same place.
訳 彼らは砂漠で、同じ場所に引き返したくなった。
往復する動き
I feel vibrations since the neighboring house is under reform.
訳 隣家がリフォーム中で、振動を感じる。
I have witnessed that the truck was driving in a zigzag.
訳 トラックがジグザグに走っているのを目撃してしまった。
The parent bird moved restlessly in and out of the nest.
訳 親鳥はせわしなく巣を出入りしていた。
Strong winds will blow on and off tomorrow afternoon.
訳 明日の午後は強風が吹いたり止んだりするだろう。
on and off は「断続的」な感じ。
The water level fluctuated above and below the red line.
訳 水位が赤い線の上や下に変動していた。
fluctuate は「上下に変動する」。
My son was curious about the waves going back and forth.
訳 息子は行ったり来たりする波に興味を示した。
豆知識
動詞の対義語を並べる言い方もあります。
The fiber structure expands and contracts with the humidity of the air.
その繊維構造は空気の湿度によって伸縮する。
