勝負や対決の基本語
今回は、勝負や対決の英語表現を見ていきます。
広い意味での「戦い」のシチュエーションです。
いざこざや、スポーツ場面、会社の競争などを想定しました。
それらに共通して使える表現を学びます。
なかなかデリケートな話題です。
しかし、知っておくべき言い方があります。
基本的な例文
まずは、例文で基本語の確認から始めましょう。
The institute fights hate speech in the posts.
訳 この機関は投稿内ののヘイトスピーチと闘っている。
His team faced a tough match, but finally won.
訳 彼のチームは厳しい試合に直面したが、最終的に勝利した。
She wondered if this rat race made sense.
訳 彼女は、このラットレースには意味があるのだろうかと考えた。
dislike と hate
dislike は「嫌い」です。
それをさらに強め、憎悪の意味を加えたものが hate です。
hate は使い方に注意が必要な言葉です。
fight と battle
「戦う」の意味で最もふつうに使われるのが fight です。
battle は「特定地域での戦闘」のイメージです。
face とconfront
face は「直面する」感じ。
face だけに「面」という字を入れた和訳が興味深いです。
confront は、「対決する・立ち向かう」。
face よりも積極的にかかわるイメージ。
match と game
ともに「試合」を意味します。
これらの使い分け方は諸説あります。
ただ、厳密にこだわらなくても通じるようです。
ちなみに、「勝負めし」は pre-game meal といいます。
rat race
「無意味な激しい競争」のことを rat race といいます。
職業的成功のため競い合い、くつろげないイメージ。

訳 彼は仲良くしずらいですが、誘います。
get on with でも同じ意味です。
This group had hostile relations with the neighbor group.
訳 このグループは隣のグループと敵対関係にあった。
This company can be our competitor in the near future.
訳 この会社は近い将来、我々の競合相手になるかもしれない。
応用編
I’m not on speaking terms with any of my ex-boyfriends.
訳 私は元カレの誰とも口をきいていません。
not on speaking terms で「口をきかないほど仲が悪い」。
Actually, the two men have a clear frenemy relationship.
訳 実を言うと、ふたりの男は明らかに友達を装った敵対関係にあります。
frenemy は friend と enemy の合成語。
似た表現に fake friend 「偽の友達」があります。
The sisters have been bitter lately, so sparks could fly.
訳 その姉妹は最近険悪なので、火花が散るかもしれない。
bitter は「険悪」。sparks fly で「火花が散る」。
He may tend to fall into the indulgence of animosity.
訳 彼は敵意に溺れる傾向があるかもしれない。
animosity は「敵意、憎しみ」。
【補足】他の不穏状態
His mother sometimes sticks her nose into him.
訳 彼の母親は、ときどき彼に干渉します。
stick one’s nose into で「干渉する」「口出しする」の意味。
The husband and wife tried to cheat each other.
訳 夫と妻はお互いに騙そうとしました。
戦いの諸相
基本編
Come on. I’ll race you to the entrance of the park.
訳 さあ、公園の入り口まで競争するよ。
The rebel challenged him to a one-on-one fight.
訳 反逆者は彼に一対一の戦いを挑んだ。
one-on-one fight は、「一騎打ち」。
The brothers got in a fight with each other yesterday.
訳 昨日その兄弟は喧嘩した。
get in a fight with で「～と喧嘩をする」。
Your opponent is about to launch a surprise attack.
訳 対戦相手は、奇襲攻撃を仕掛けようとしている。
surprise attack は、「奇襲・だまし討ち」。
My enemy’s enemy is my friend. The story was like this.
訳 敵の敵は味方。このような話だった。
A warehouse for storing offensive and defensive weapons.
訳 （ここは）攻撃・防御用の武器を保管する倉庫。
応用編
The gunmen had a showdown concerning the allocation of funds.
訳 ガンマンたちは資金配分をめぐって対決した。
showdown は「対決」。face-off も同じ意味です。
He was relieved because he managed to shake off the pursuer.
訳 なんとか追っ手を振り切ることができたので、彼はほっとした。
He refuted all the criticism raised by the rigid controversialist.
訳 彼は、厳しい論客が提起した批判にすべて反論した。
Their dispute has become a protracted battle that they disliked.
訳 彼らの争いは、いやな長期戦になった。
Hopefully the result will send them to the consolation match.
訳 この結果で、彼らが敗者復活戦に回されることを祈る。
elimination tournament は、ふつうの「トーナメント方式」です。
round-robin tournament は、「総当たり戦」です。
戦いの技術
Don’t use dirty tricks. Play fair and square until the end.
訳 汚い手を使わないで。最後まで正々堂々とプレーすること。
fair and square は、「正々堂々」。形容詞にも副詞にもなります。
He consulted his coach about how to win the final game.
訳 どうすれば最終戦に勝てるか、彼は監督に相談した。
“Give it your all,” the manager shouted with his face red.
訳 「全力を尽くせ」と、顔を真っ赤にして監督は叫んだ。
give it your all は「全力を尽くす」の意味です。
I’m looking for those who will protect me from rude bystanders.
訳 無礼な傍観者から私を守ってくれる人を探している。
Information warfare brings all sorts of deception to the media.
訳 情報戦は、メディアにさまざまな欺瞞をもたらす。
The point is: Working together as a team is crucial to making it.
訳 重要なことは、 チームとして協力することが成功のために非常に重要であるということ。
He told the truth. The story was just profiting while others fought.
訳 彼は真実を話した。他人が戦うあいだに利益を得ていただけの話でした。
profiting while others fight は、日本語で言う「漁夫の利」。
戦いの結果
The score was boiled down to two wins, three losses, and a draw.
訳 スコアは最終的に、2勝3敗1引き分けだった。
Unfortunately, he is likely to lose his legal battle with the old enemy.
訳 残念ながら、彼は宿敵との法廷闘争に敗れる可能性が高い。
An unexpected, overwhelming victory took the audience by surprise.
訳 予想外の圧倒的な勝利が、観客を驚かせた。
take by surprise は、「不意打ちを食わせる」。
We had a comeback. と表現すると、「私たちは逆転勝利した」です。
In this competition, my favorite team achieved great success.
訳 この大会で、私のお気に入りのチームは大きな成功を収めた。
The couple have been on the long road to reconciliation.
訳 夫婦が、和解への長い道を歩んでいた。
「和解」は reconciliation です。
No side はラグビーの試合終了を指す言葉。
ちなみに、今は Full time といいます。
日本では、敵・味方が和解して、お互いに健闘を称える意味で使われます。
戦いと気持ち
The letter encouraged them to fight against the opposition.
訳 その手紙のおかげで、彼らは敵と戦う勇気が出た。
The player is a sore loser and doesn’t take responsibility.
訳 その選手は負け惜しみを言う人で、責任を取りませんよ。
sore loser は「負けを認めない人」。
One cried out in humiliation and another showed his anger.
訳 ある人は屈辱に叫び、またある人は怒りをあらわにした。
She thanked everyone with a joyful look on her face.
訳 彼女は喜びの表情を浮かべてみんなに礼を述べた。
Stand your ground and you will gain the trust of all.
訳 自分の立場を貫けば、誰からも信頼されるようになる。
stand one’s ground は「自分の立場を守る」の意味。
